ACS New York Section Awards. We have just received two pieces of good news from the ACS New York section: both former Binghamton Chemistry Graduates received awards. Prof. David Sarno, graduated from Binghamton Chemistry (BS ’94, MAT ’97, PhD ’02), was the recipient of the ACS New York Section’s Outstanding Service Award for 2009; Mr. Steven Borneman, graduated from Binghamton Chemistry (BS ’00, MAT ’02, MS ’04), was the recipient of the Nichols Foundation H.S. Chemistry Teacher Award for 2009. The awards were presented at the section wide conference of the New York section of the ACS on January 16, 2010 at St. John’s University. Congratulations!

Binghamton Foundation Travel Award Received. Dan Xu recently received “Binghamton Foundation Travel Award” for Fall 2009. This award supports travel for excellent Binghamton University doctoral students to attend academic conferences or for dissertation research each semester. Congratulations!

A New 600 NMR Facility to be Installed in Chemistry. The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) recently granted an award of $550,000 to BU Chemistry under a “Major Research Instrumentation Program” led by Professor Eriks Rozners. This fund will be used to setup a new laboratory with a state-of-the-art nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system. The new multi-user NMR instrument will support Professor Rozners and his colleagues in expanding their research in new directions.

PEC Distinguished Service Award Received. Dr. Alexsa Silva received the 2009 Professional Employees Council (PEC) Distinguished Service Award for employees with greater than 5 years of service. This is an outstanding recognition of her tremendous service to the department and the University.
